THE DEAL: Reformer (something called the Cadillac and Stability Chair) and Mat Pilates, Barre-work and specialised pre and post natal training in single, double and group training. As big fans of the independent studio - not a big faceless chain but a place run by people whose passion translates into high quality and personalised classes, taught by experts - we loved Pilates Movement, run by Pilates queen (and former professional dancer) Isabelle and her talented team. You’ll find the studio off an inner courtyard of a lovely residential building off a cobbled street in Mitte. The studio is warm and spacious with a small but luxe shower room and locker area where you can freshen up after class.
THE WORKOUT: The thing about Pilates that you have to remember is that its not about the sweaty, heart-pumping high you usually get from a cardio work-out. Its about working deep into the muscles with slower, finely tuned movements which hurt like hell and build a strong and long, lean body. Reformer Pilates with Anna did this to a T. Even if your not a ‘pilates’ kinda person (you know - assuming its easy and not really a work-out or thinking its just for old ladies) you need to try this out. We were one of those people. But if you’re under the impression you’ll be lying down on the Reformer bed for an hour feeling blissfully relaxed with soothing jazz in the background then we should tell you now - it won’t be like that. Yes there’s jazz but there’s no slacking off - this is a proper work-out. Within minutes of the ‘light warm-up’ our abs were seriously burning. For the main work-out, we performed a series of exercises; bridges, abdominal curls, 100s, table-top leg presses and particularly evil were the bent knee circles which produced a burn deep in the glutes and hip stabilisers within seconds. Anna’s instructions were spot on and she never let any of us slack of with poor posture. After one session you’ll leave with a rather satisfying all-over muscle-ache, a firmer bum and more postural awareness.
THE PRICE: The prices reflect the location - being in prime Mitte a trial class starts at €18 to join a the three person Reformer class. First timers who want to join the group mat Pilates class its €12. If you love it (we don’t blame you) and want to invest its €60 for a private 1-2-1, €40 for a class with a partner, €30 for a class with two others and €18 for a group class.
