YOUR NEW HOME IN BERLIN FOR COLDER MONTHS. COME HERE HUNGRY TO WARM UP, FEAST AND DRINK WITH FRIENDS UNTIL LATE. PLUS IT’S SOME OF THE BEST HUMMUS YOU’LL EVER EAT. YOU’RE WELCOME.
WHERE: Gormannstraße 17B,10119 Berlin.
THE DEAL: From the outside this place couldn’t be more Berlin with is graffiti covered walls and lack of clear signage. On the inside a charming mish mash of furniture and deep warmth from Tel Aviv will hit you in the face (and soon after the stomach). This Israeli gastro is the ideal home from home where you feel like you’re arriving at a good friends party. Hang out for as long as you like and soak up several drinks at the bar with real authentic Israeli food. Its open for lunch and dinner, so really there’s no reason for you to go home.
THE FOOD: Israeli classics with a twist are the main évènements. Everything on the menu is simple, familiar and delicious - but there are some real stars that you must order. Not to be obvious but first off we need to mention the hummus. Some of the city’s best in our opinion and big enough to share, it’s rich and creamy with ample hot pillowy bread to mop it up and vegetables (because you know #health). Even still, Yafo goes way beyond the Berlin standard Israeli hummus scene. Cheese lovers the salty ‘Feta’ plate with olive oil, spices and tomato hits the spot - but we recommend ordering something tomatoey alongside to break up the dish as it can get to be a bit dry by itself. The baked cauliflower is not to be missed- it arrives golden brown and drizzled with incredible Tahini. The slow roasted ‘Aubergine’ with tomato, Tahini and egg is like a warm hug on a plate. The ‘Sinia’ slow-cooked dish is also a well-known signature which puts minced lamb under roasted aubergine and bakes together with Matbucha (a tomatoey pepper stew), Tahini and Yoghurt. Every week there are also seasonal fish and meat specials to choose from. If you have any room for dessert then squeeze in a ‘Mahalabeya’ which is a traditional Arabic milk pudding with rose water, pomegranate and pistachios. Chocoholics can opt for the chocolate mousse - serious kudos if you have the eating stamina for this :) Drinks-wise Yafo is the dream - serving up cocktails and a full wine list until late. The ‘Bombay Smash Basil'‘ and the ‘Old Mate’ went down a treat last time we were there.
THE PRICE: Reasonable since you get full-up pretty fast here. The hummus plate is €7.5, ‘Feta’ €6.5 and cauliflower is €6. For mains the ‘Aubergine’ €11 and ‘Sinia’ €13 are both sizeable. Cocktails start from €8 (most of them on the menu are €8.5). Wine is pretty standard around €4-5 euro a glass.
PAY BY: €ash and card.
BEST FOR: Spending cosy autumn nights with friends. And hummus addicts of course.
