CAN WE JUST TALK ABOUT HOW MUCH WE LOVE PIZZA? BUT NOT JUST ANY PIZZA. IF AUTHENTIC SIMPLICITY IS YOUR VIBE THEN COME HERE. IN ONE BITE THE STANDARD TAKES YOU ON A TRIP STRAIGHT TO NAPLES - YES ITS THAT GOOD.
WHERE: On a quiet street in Prenzlauer Berg, Templinerstrasse 7.
THE DEAL: As previously stated, The Standard serves up some of best slices in the city. Like pizza magicians. The slick, minimalist design (the typical Berlin fashion) made us second-guess if our pizza was going to be the real stuff of Neapolitan dreams but as soon as we took our first bite we knew these guys knew what they were doing.
THE FOOD: The deal-breaker when it comes to pizza is often the base. First of all everything is hand-made on-site. The dough which is freshly prepared every day in a hand-held dough mixer (a left to rest for 24-30 hours so we were told) is made with 100% pure Campanian soft wheat flour. Only San Marzano tomatoes are allowed in this gaff (the perfect balance between sharp and sweet) which are hand-crushed to make the tomato sauce. Finally the buffalo mozzarella cheese (or Fior di Latte to pizza nerds) is sourced from a small village Agerola, in the mountains, north of the Amalfi coast. These three elements come together into the mothership of The Standard a.k.a. their specially designed Neapolitan cupola oven for just 60-90 seconds! And then out it comes, courtesy of maestro Alessandro - perfectly cooked, browned and bubbling. As well as the traditional margerita, you might want to go for their "Bianca - white pie" with mozzarella, courgette, fresh tomato, pine nuts and ricotta. The parma ham, parmesan and rocket topping or spicy salami and peppers combo are the ones for meat-lovers. Vegans don't despair, there's a vegan "Marinara" on the menu that will shut up anyone who said that pizza without the cheese was boring. If you're the kind of person who likes living life outside the box then there's a Calzone.
THE PRICE: Prices are a little on the high end for pizza but considering you're getting dinner and a "holy shit" mind blown moment it feels like a bargain. A Margherita is €9.50, vegan Marinara €8.00, spicy salami €14.00, "Bianca" €14.50 and Calzone €12.50. A good selection of wine (glasses starting at €5.90), beer (from €3.20) and soft drinks as well as decent coffee top off a bloody good meal.
