A vegan, zero-waste restaurant that makes delicious food. Winning…

WHERE:  Frea, Torstraße 180, 10115 Berlin.

U / S BAHN: Oranienburger Tor / Nordbahnhof.

THE DEAL: This super sustainable restaurant which recently opened shop in Mitte wants to change the way we eat out with tasty food and a feel-good ethos.

THE FOOD: As soon as you step inside Frea’s doors you can feel the veggie vibes. The decor is all warm woody tones with plants everywhere and large windows which let in lots of light. Everything featured on the menu is made in-house (from hazelnut milk to the kombucha to the pasta). Frea also receives all its ingredients in compostable cardboard or paper packaging from local suppliers. They even have an amazing machine that turns all leftovers and packaging into compost in 24 hours. Starters consist of seasonal salad, which comes in a big bowl with a creamy dressing, homemade flatbread with delicious dips or mushroom tacos. The flatbread is really stand-out; pillowy, buttery bread that matches perfectly with a velvety-smooth hummus and spicy red pepper dip. For mains the potato terrine with Portobello mushrooms and parsley root sauce is the kitchen’s signature and one to order if you arrived starving (it’s pretty dense). The potato is soft on the inside and crispy on the outside with earthy, meaty mushrooms served on top. The homemade green tortellini is filled with broccoli and served with lemon sauce which gives it a fresh and zesty flavour. There is also usually a weekly special too which focuses on what’s best in season right now. Desserts are perhaps the best thing there is. Strawberry Meringue with lemon cream and chocolate mousse with apricot and granita were heaven. There was also a lemon tart available as a special when we visited which was incredible; crispy, rich pastry and a citrus, sharp but sweet curd-like filling. If you’re a vegan you’ll know how hard it is to find a great-tasting vegan-friendly dessert options (even in Berlin), so Frea offers sweet-relief from the usual disappointment.
