A PLACE FOR PATIENCE BUT YOU’LL BE REWARDED AT THE END. MASSIVE PORTIONS OF EPIC BRUNCH FOOD. PLUS THERE’S COCKTAILS. WIN FUCKING WIN.
WHERE: Rosenthaler Str. 1, 10119 Berlin.
THE DEAL: Brunch with cocktails in all its glory. The brainchild from Circus Hotel next door and Friedrichhain’s cult classic Silo Coffee, Commonground is a favourite amongst the locals - and for good reason. The quirky-cool design, outdoor courtyard and hip crowd make it all the more desirable as a destination for fitness foodies.
THE FOOD: Your typical brunch menu but pimped to the max. No messing around here - come hungry to appreciate the portions. Let’s start with the coffee; the stuff here is GOOD, courtesy of local coffee roaster Fjord. We love a bitter, strong taste so for us it was bang on the money. “The Commonground” dish seemed to be the obvious one to order (Sourdough, poached eggs, avocado, tomatoes and salsa verde with a suggested addition of mushrooms or bacon). It was good - but we have to admit the rest of the menu was so bloody tasty that this fell a little bit “meh”. If you’re going for it, you need extra Sourdough to mop up all the saucy goodness. The open shredded “Breakfast taco” was INSANE and also massive (don’t worry we finished it). We chose to have it with shredded pork and we didn’t regret it. Classic avo on toast with home-made hummus is a winner. The tomatoey jam sauce and salad with chopped nuts honestly makes it. We would also advise to order anything with extra mushrooms - they really are spectacular. Woody, earthy and wild they give everything a really lovely tang. With our eagle eyes we spied the Mexican black beans dish and the Spiced Chickpea & Zucchini Fritters which also looked good. Mimosa’s (nice and orangey) and a grapefruit juice (exactly the right balance between sour citrus and fruity freshness) were our drinks of choice. The cocktail bar set-up looked like it knew what it was doing so it could be worth going back for an evening visit where they do cocktails to share (and when its more acceptable to go ham).
THE PRICE: The usual brunch prices (plus a little). “The Commonground” is €12, Avo toast is €8.8 and “Breakfast tacos” €11. Extras like mushrooms or avo are €2.2, extra Sourdough is €1.5. Flat white is €3.3 and a cortado €2.6. Grapefruit juice is €4 and Mimosa is €7.
PAY BY: €ash and card.
BEST FOR: Satisfying hungry, boozy brunch cravings. Also great for those who don’t mind queuing for a table (this place gets packed).
