WHEN LIFE GETS HECTIC IT'S HARD TO FIND THE TIME TO MAKE YOUR OWN HEALTH-GIVING FOOD OR GET OUT FOR A LEISURELY LUNCH (I MEAN WE DON'T MAKE OUR OWN BECAUSE WE'RE LAZY BUT WE'VE HEARD SOME PEOPLE DO...) SO HERE'S WHERE BEETS&ROOTS COMES IN....
WHERE: We went to Große Hamburger Str. 38. in Mitte. You might see the queues for lunch but don't worry it moves fast! There's also a second branch on Tieckstraße 9.
THE DEAL: Quick, healthy food to-go with pretty decent prices. It's not the most memorable meal you'll ever have, but its reliable; the staff are friendly, the portions generous and everything tastes fresh. Be careful if you're going to make your own salad / bowl as the "extras" add-up fast!
THE FOOD: A wide selection of seasonal salads and healthy bowls as well as wraps and soups. Our favourite vegan option was the Protein bowl with butternut squash, quinoa, edamame beans, beetroot and avocado. A nice combination of sweet, nutty, soft, crunch, fresh and filling. There's also a "Japanese" (ramen, edamame and eggplant), "Italian" (mozzarella, pesto, tomato, rocket, parmesan, courgette noodles) and "Korean bowl" (egg, rice, kimchi - you know the drill). Meat lovers should opt for the meatball wrap. If we weren't currently bathing in desert-like heat then we'd recommend one of the Thai soups. But we are - so don't be a nutter and go for a salad. Our friend M had the "Beef noodle" which he said was quite good. There's also sweet treats to grab for that late afternoon slump - brownies, cookies, bars, banana bread and the like.
THE DRINKS: Grab a cold drink from the open fridge (which you'll want to do in this heat). The usual stuff is available here; coca-cola light, fritz kola, water, beer etc.
THE PRICE: Prices start off well but can easily climb up if you add extras. The "Protein bowl" favourite was €8.90. Beef noodle with an extra egg was around €11.25. Most of the salads like "Green salad" and "Falafel salad" are €7.90. Wraps are a little cheaper - around €5.90 (a meat-lovers feast think "Meatball", "Chicken Caesar" and "Mexican"). Snack-wise a cookie is €2.50 and brownie €3.20.
PAY BY: €ash and card.
BEST FOR: Busy people who want healthy food fast. The inside area and ordering station gets hectic at peak times (not for the claustrophobic) so beet (get-it?!) the rush and get there early.
