Buck & Breck

HIDDEN, UNDERGROUND SPEAKEASY BARS....BERLIN IS FULL OF THEM. AND YET BUCK & BRECK HOLDS A LITTLE PLACE IN OUR HEART FOR ITS GENUINE BERLIN COOL AND RELAXED ATTITUDE.

WHERE:  Brunnenstraße 177, 10119 Berlin.

THE DEAL: Hidden behind a secret door between a police station and Doris Bistro is this beauty of a cocktail bar. Supposedly named after the Champagne cocktail (a nod to former U.S. president James Buchanan and his VP John Breckinridge). Wondering along the main street of Brunnenstrasse , you wouldn't know about Buck & Breck unless we told you (cats out the bag now). In the doorway you'll notice a very subtle buzzer to the bar which reads "Bar  -Hide your phone and enjoy the drink". Once you're let in you'll feel right at home; with only room for fourteen guests at the super sleek black table Buck & Breck is the epitome of "intimate speakeasy".  Cocktails are predominantly gin, whisky and brandy-based and strong (but not overpoweringly so) with interesting flavour combinations (think spices and fresh fruits). Watch the bar-tender at work at he serves up whats on the menu or whatever you fancy drinking really - they are very open to making something up for your tastes.

THE FOOD: Eating is cheating. You should line your stomach before you come. Otherwise there's plenty of kebab joints around the corner that you can hide on the way home (if you can stand).

THE PRICE: You're in a proper bar now, not a two for one happy hour. A cocktail starts around €10- €14. Champagne is €15 a glass. That being said, its a cosy environment where you feel at home and 'part of the club'. You don't feel like you're in a rush to drink quickly and measures of alcohol are generous which means you can nurse one drink for a while. Cocktails are bloody delicious though so it can quickly escalate - warn your bank card now.

PAY BY: €ash and card.

BEST FOR: Feeling like a sophisticated local (in-the-know) and drinking cocktails into the early hours.
