LAB Kitchen at Adidas Runbase
THE IDEAL POST WORK-OUT SITUATION FOR WHEN YOU’RE FEELING SLIGHTLY DEAD FROM A BIG TRAINING SESSION AND NEED SUSTENANCE FAST.
WHERE: Find this healthy hang-out and cafe at the Adidas Runbase, Schleusenufer 4.
THE DEAL: One part community hang-out, one part healthy cafe, the LAB dishes out tasty, plant-based food to hungry runbaser's to fuel up for the day ahead.
THE FOOD: Weekend brunch is tasty as f***, we couldn't recommend it more. LAB takes the tastiest plant-based ingredients (a.k.a. avocado, sweet potato, tahini, dukkah... we could keep going...) and combines them in generous portions to make the ultimate soul bowls. Double shot went for the Blue bowl (Sweet potato, guacamole beans, lentils, corn, scrambled tofu and spinach) and our companion the Orange bowl (poached egg, brown rice, mushrooms, tofu, cabbage, salad, sprouts and mango) and we loved them both equally. We were too late to try any breakfast options but the Protein Porridge sounded right up our street (oat, chia, cacao, coconut, goji) as did the Paleo breakfast; a pimped-up scrambled eggs with veg essentially with homemade pesto, avocado and sweet potato wedges. Lunch during the week, or so we were informed, consists of fresh salad plates to choose from. Snacks like granola bars, truffles and cookies are also on-tap for a quick pre or post work-out or no work-out sugar-hit. Vegans will be pleased to know that most things on the menu can be made 100% vegan - just ask the friendly staff.
THE DRINKS: The coffee isn't memorable but LAB do have homemade almond-oat milk which we like. A couple of sludgy green smoothies sat in the open fridge while we were there, available to take-away. Presumably they have a bigger selection during the week which are made fresh everyday. Super-foods like Spirulina are added to them for an extra health boost, so even if they don't look great you know they'll do you good.
THE PRICE: The flat white price usually sets the tone for what's to come. At LAB a flat white is €3.30, a matcha latte €4.50 and smoothies are €5.50. Breakfast has some good options if you don't want to spend too much. The fruit & nut butter toast comes in at €4.50. If you're after something heartier then the Protein porridge at €6.50 is also a good choice. For Summer days the Smoothie bowl is €7.00. Daily fresh salads are available for €8.50 and at the weekend the brunch bowls are between €8.50 up to €8.90 for the Orange bowl.
PAY BY: €ash or card.
BEST FOR: Getting a group together for a open-air weekend work-out and lunch.
