Good Life Eatery
for Breakfast and lunch mid-week you want something quick and health-giving but nothing too fancy or “detox” (RABBIT FOOD).
WHERE: 69 Marylebone Ln, Marylebone, W1U 2PH, London. (There are also three other branches in Motcomb Street, Chelsea and St John’s Wood).
Tube: Bond Street / Baker Street.
THE DEAL: Good Life Eatery is all about serving fresh, tasty food that just so happens to be healthy (and often gluten-free!) This is a far cry from diets and detoxes. Accept that this is not a destination for lengthy eat-in meals; grab and go, fast lunch options when you’re at work, or home-delivery is more their forte.
THE FOOD: You know you’re in a healthy cafe when dishes are called things like “The Shred Breakfast”(sweet potato and harissa mash with green and seeds) and “Skinny Benedict” (eggs, tomato, avocado, pesto and toast). Granted, we don’t love the names, but they don’t take away from the fact that the food tastes delicious. Out of all the breakfast options the Love toast has to be our favourite; toast with almond butter, banana, strawberry, agave (gluten free also available). There’s also a build-your-own avo toast option (genius!) and you add chilli or no chilli, feta, salmon, tofu, egg, jerk chicken. If you’re feeling a low on the immunity front then get yourself a “First-aid” shot. Its a potent mix of lemon, echinacea, tumeric, baobab to shock your body into better functioning. If you’re recovering from the night before try the “After-party” with all of the usual hangover heroes; beetroot, lemon, ginger, milk thistle and dandelion. A wide selection of cold-pressed juices, nut mylks and smoothies are also available if breakfast isn’t your thing. Lunchtime has the usual salads, wraps and sandwich options. The “Goodness Bowl” has got all the fancy healthy-stuff; greens, broccoli, sweet potato & harissa mash with crackers, quinoa falafels, lemon tahini, beetroot, avocado and turmeric dressing, and makes your usual Pret salad look a bit sad. On a cold day warm up with one of the hot bowls options. The Chili (vegan or beef) with three bean chiptole chili, coconut yogurt, sweet potatoes, and either quinoa or brown rice really stands out as a filling, nutritious meal that warms the soul. Big appetites can tuck into the jerk chicken burrito which is weighty and loaded up with beans, rice, avocado, greens, jalapeno dressing and vegan cheezy sprinkles. Despite being packed in the burrito holds everything together well, so it isn’t too messy. For something sweet, the carrot cake slice or the peanut butter cups undo all of that good work with the green juice and salads (but they are bloody good). Chuck them into your order at the last minute and maybe no one will notice.
