EVER DREAMED OF A PLACE YOU CAN GO FOR A COSY-HEALTHY-BOOZY SUNDAY LUNCH? SORT OF LIKE A PUB BUT ONE THAT SERVES HEALTHY FOOD? THEN BEN’S CANTEEN HAPPENED.
WHERE: 422 Garratt Ln, SW18 4HW, London (plus there’s a second location in Battersea).
THE DEAL: Ben’s Canteen is South West London answer to the whole healthy-pub thing - we love it and you should too.
THE FOOD: Finally a pub for locals, that does healthy brunch food with great coffee and banging Bloody Mary’s. These guys also do dinner but we think the brunch is where it’s at. As soon as you sit down you won’t want to get up again for a long time. It’s all about relaxed Aussie vibes here - friendly staff stand in a backdrop of neon signs, white walls, stripped wooden floors, mismatched tables and folding french doors. Healthy or hedonist, this place can do both, and at very fair prices too! The menu is everything you want from brunch; banana pancakes, sweetcorn kale fritters, nourish bowl, smashed avocado toast, eggs with salmon and even an Acai bowl with berries, oats, goji and cacao nibs. The smashed avocado and poached egg is nothing new but they do it so well here. The egg comes runny, with lashings of avocado and pink sauerkraut, which gives a nice sharp, freshness to the dish. All of this comes on top of quality Sourdough. The fritters are also a fantastic surprise, arriving hot and crispy with pickled carrot, spiced Labneh and a runny poached egg. If you aren’t here to f*ck about and feeling a little worse for wear then “The Recovery burger” is hangover heaven (but possibly cardiac arrest food) with the works; meat patty, black pud, bacon, cheese, hash brown and eggs. Sides include epic additions like “Halloumi Fries” with pomegranate Ketchup. Full-out hedonist mode (we aren’t quite there yet…) will lead you to the menu’s cocktail section to find Bloody Mary’s, Brunch G & T’s, Bucks Fizz and Bellini’s. Bottomless brunch also happens at the weekend. Otherwise behave yourself with a fresh beetroot and ginger juice and stave off that lingering winter cold. Definitely get coffee, it has a a nice bitter - roasted edge to it. Just remember that portions are large so you could spend a lazy afternoon working your way through it. And we are totally fine with that.
