Fierce Grace Brixton + Canova Hall
Yoga with attitude and extra sweat. Then welcome in the food coma with a boozy brunch done Italian style.
START: Fierce Grace Brixton, 372A Coldharbour Ln, SW9 8PL, London.
FINISH: Canova Hall, 248 Ferndale Rd, Brixton, SW9 8FR, London.
THE WORKOUT: 11am Fierce Grace 90 minute flow with Chimezie. Sweat out Saturday night’s antics at this classic hot flow with the bad-ass yogis from Fierce Grace in Brixton. Expect a friendly crowd to greet you on the mat, and feel yourself warming up in the heated space before you begin moving through the workout. The class is general level, but still remains challenging in parts, with great variety and sequences to stop your mind from wondering off. A nice combination of hip openers, upper body strength, bum toners and core stability come together to give a fully rounded workout. For those familiar with or advanced in yoga then the you’ll notice that the class combines the central poses of classical hatha yoga, Bikram, Power and Ashtanga Yoga together in a beautiful mix so you work on fitness, strength, stamina, flexibility and alignment all in one go. If you aren’t used to the heat, it can be intense so go slow and take time out to just lie down and rest if you need to. Flow to a soundtrack of relaxing tunes that are sure to help you get out of your mind and in tune with your body. Be prepared to sweat a LOT. And then bask in the glorious ten minute relaxation to end and roll on into Sunday afternoon. Easy.
FYI: Remember to bring two towels (one to place over your mat and one to shower with), along with your mat and water bottle. This is mandatory for class :)
THE FOOD: Just underneath the recently opened members club The Department Store, Canova Hall is a winner for weekends and weekdays. During the week it serves as the perfect co-working coffee hotspot in Brixton. Move into the weekend and the tone moves to a relaxed party vibe and living for the good times. Most importantly they do brunch properly with an Italian twist. Tasty wood-fire oven pizza and authentic pasta’s frequent the menu with plenty of meaty and vegan-friendly options to cater for all. Plant-based plates not to be missed are the beetroot gnocchi with pistachio pesto, and the “Vegan Viking” pizza with cashew cheese, pesto, rocket and chilli on a thin, crisp base. The “Samson” pizza is a salty-sweet flavour bomb combining Salami, chilli, mozzarella and hot honey. Opt for more traditional brunch plates like the Avocado toast with feta, chilli, and dukkah, the Chilli Hash Browns with fried eggs, smokey tomatoes and rocket pesto. The Big Bacon Sandwich is for serious Sunday hanger and comes with fried eggs, triple cooked chips and spicy ketchup. For sweet toothed brunch-goers the toast with figs, maple syrup, thyme and mascarpone is light, fluffy and melt in the mouth. If you want to go the whole hog then bottomless options for two hours include unlimited juices, Mimosa’s, Prosecco and Rum punch. Happy Sunday!
FYI: If you have a friend who’s a member then get yourself in to the members room. Pop Brixton is also around the corner for some more street-food browsing.
