Yoga Klub + Umami
EVER FEEL LIKE YOU DON'T DO MUCH WITH YOUR EVENINGS MID-WEEK? HEALTHY HEDONISTIC ACTIVITIES DON'T EASILY GO WITH GETTING UP THE NEXT DAY FOR WORK. BUT WE'VE GOT YOUR BACK - WITH YOGA + BOMB ASIAN FOOD THAT'S a short WALK AWAY. WHAT A COMBO.
START: Yoga Klub - Schönhauser Allee 26, 10435 Berlin.
FINISH: UMAMI Knaackstraße 16, 10405 Berlin.
U - BAHN: Eberswalder Straße.
THE WORKOUT: Monday night Hatha Yoga at 18.30pm. This style of yoga is a mix of different asanas (physical postures) combined with breathing techniques. The pace in this class is slower with longer holds which feel muscles burn more intensely and the mind work harder not to react to arising sensations. The studio has a lovely, calm atmosphere to it and you don’t feel packed in like some other classes in Berlin. After an hour and a half of vinyasa’s, pranayama and relaxation expect to float right out feeling calmer, lighter, stronger and stretchier. We also felt more 'ourselves' (less of the crazy) - which was freaking awesome. The studio is inspired from B.K.S. Iyengar so you can also expect a more supportive approach to poses using straps and other props.
THE FOOD: Some of the best indo-chinese food we've tasted in the city. Sit outside their Prenzlauer Berg location surrounded by their brightly-lit lanterns (we love a restaurant with fairy lights) and you'll see the Water tower. The food is authentic, fresh and full of flavour and easily caters for vegetarians and vegans. Choose from traditional PHO soups, dumplings, summer rolls, noodles, clay pot and fried rice dishes with a variety of sauces and marinades. There's a variety of duck, beef, fish, prawns and tuna for meat-eaters. And veggie's have a wide choice across PHO, a Veggie Stew, Seitan and Tofu stir-fries. And if for some reason you're not in the mood for typical Asian, they have two versions of a burger - the "Buddha-Burger"- in a steamed Bao-roll or the "BanhBao-Burger" both with sweet potato fries. For groups or if you have a bottom-less pit for a stomach then you can opt for one of the set menus which gets you a few starters, mains and sides to share. Prices are reasonable and portions perfectly sized (they've managed to get that hard to achieve balance between feeling well-fed but not too full). Drink-wise they had an interesting "aloe" juice and various cocktails - but its a school night remember so lets not get too carried away....
THE PRICE: A drop-in yoga class (1.5 hours) is €14. Four class package is €52, eight classes are €88 or twelve are €120. Private lessons - 1 hour for €60 or 1.5 hours for €80. Umami: "Buddha-Burger" is €8.4, fish clay pot €7.4, BBQ prawns €9.9, Szechuan Tuna €15.9, veggie dishes are around €7.4.
BEST FOR: Making the most of a school night (a.k.a. when you need to get your ass to work the next day).
