TRIPLE SHOT - Tempelhofer Feld run + Sommerbad Neukölln + SELIG.BERLIN
WHEN YOU'RE CRAVING THE OUTDOORS BUT DON'T WANT TO GO TOO FAR THEN TAKE YOURSELF DOWN TO TEMPELHOFER FELD. GO AT YOUR OWN PACE AND EASE INTO SUNDAY WITH A RUN, SWIM, BRUNCH MINI TRIATHLON DIY ADVENTURE.
START: Tempelhofer Feld, Tempelhofer Damm, 12101 Berlin (start wherever you want inside the field).
FINISH: At Selig.Berlin, Herrfurthplatz 14, 12049 Berlin.
U - BAHN: U8 Boddinstraße.
THE WORKOUT: Running - not much explanation needed here hopefully. But its also your Sunday and your workout so really anything goes. The track is a decent stretch of 12km if you follow in a loop all the way around so you can walk, run, skate, bike, pogo-stick (whatever you're into) your way around. End up at the Sommerbad swimming pool for cool-down swim after.
THE FOOD: If you come hangry to Selig.Berlin (a.k.a. so hungry to the point you are angry) then you might not love it. The service isn't amazing and the staff don't go out of their way to take your order. That being said, when the food does turn up its pretty damn delicious. We had the Vegan breakfast which was everything we wanted it to be; avocado, babaganoush, hummus, tomatoes, Portobello mushrooms and bread come together on a plate, freshly made and well seasoned. Plus the mushrooms were some of the best; really meaty and earthy. Our friend (R) who was visiting and M opted for the "Acai Bowl", which came with granola, fresh strawberries, banana, coconut and goji berries and was hailed as a damn fine version of the typical Acai bowl. Coffee here is fine - nothing to write home about but they have a god selection of nut mylks and regular organic dairy milk. Finally and most crucially THE CAKE. HOLY SH*T. They have some sexy looking cakes at the counter to choose from - most of them vegan friendly (hallelujah) - think peanut butter chocolate, banana bread, blueberry icing and some sort of cheesecake extravaganza. The peanut butter chocolate lives up to its appearance. We promise you won't be disappointed if all you want is hard core sticky sweet gluttony. You're welcome.
THE PRICE: Let us introduce you to your new free gym. It's called a park / generally outside. So running yourself around the air-strip track is a total bargain (hint its free). For entry to the Sommerbad its €5.50 for the whole day on a weekend. There's also a special price of €3.50 if you want to take advantage of a sunny evening after work, which gets you in anytime from 17:30 until close (22:00). At Selig prices seemed a little high for some dishes and others were very reasonable. A sizeable "Acai Bowl" is €8.50, an avocado bagel is €9.50, 3 eggs any way is €7.00, Eggs Benedict €9.80 and Vegan breakfast €10.80. There's also tasty sounding pancakes and porridge on the menu, with various toppings starting at €6.50. The old benchmark flat white comes in at €3.40.
BEST FOR: An active Sunday to soak up the sun.
