FINISH: Benedict, Uhlandstraße 49, 10719 Berlin.
U - BAHN: Spichernstraße / Hohenzollernplatz
THE WORKOUT: Sunday 11:00am House spin with Johanna at ride.bln’s west outpost. If you like your spin class to offer a balance of lower and upper body then this is bang on your vibe. This is going to work your whole body and is tough from the get-go. The “warm-up” is really more like all the other tracks - fast-paced and sticky. A lot of the time is spent up and out of the saddle (which we personally like) to perform all the deadly upper body push-ups and arm raises that the instructor incorporates into the mix. It’s as much a co-ordination challenge as it is a heart-pumping cardio one. Don’t worry if you find yourself out of sync - everyone is in the same boat! Out of the saddle also means you can turn up the resistance for extra leg burn. Ride along to the upbeat House theme, which does a great job of picking you up with feel-good weekend tracks when you really don’t think you can go on. Somewhere towards the middle-to-end is a dedicated upper-body track using dumb-bell weights which are stored on the bike. Your legs get a break but your arms will really feel it; bicep curls, tricep extensions, front raises, shoulder presses and punching movements all make a solid appearance. Push to the end of this truly high intensity session and you feel like you’re on cloud nine. Expect a complimentary cold towel on your way out - the ride.bln guys really know how to put on a good time.
Pro-tip: ride also has an intro for beginners class running before at 10:00am if you want to work-up to HOUSE.
THE FOOD: These guys are so bloody good at breakfast that they have an official Breakfast Club you can join. If you like eggs, then even better (since they are pretty much in every dish). Unsurprisingly, the “Eggs Benedict” is a popular choice. Two poached eggs, toasted brioche, Hollandaise sauce and a topping of choice (ham & bacon, smoked salmon, creamed spinach, mushroom, ground beef or shrimp) and of course an unlimited bread basket. Egg addicts can also take comfort in a range of omelette options, “omelette balls” which are some strange twist on eggs. Other classics include a full English breakfast, Shakshuka and the “Tower of Babylon” is an epic Iraqi breakfast dish with fried eggplant, tomato, egg and tahini-amba sauce. The meaty breakfast offering is strong and quite frankly unnecessary; “Steak n Eggs Texas Style” is a 200 gram extravaganza of an entrecôte with lemon butter, two fried eggs, green salad and fries. The steak sandwich is a juicy sirloin on ciabatta with onions, mushrooms, cheese, spicy sriracha aioli, a fried egg and sweet potato fries. “French Toast" is a dieter’s nightmare but tastes of sheer heaven; thick slabs of brioche marinated in milk and cinnamon, fried and served with blueberry jam, maple syrup and sugar. Continuing with the sweet, there is an epic array of Benedict Pancakes, all come sprinkled with sugar. You can have them plain (why would you?!), choose a classic flavour like blueberry or chocolate or go more exotic with white chocolate and espresso or banana with condensed milk and toasted coconut. There are also toppings; namely chocolate, bacon, blueberry jam and sour cream. After all that butter, Vegan’s can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that there are lovely herby chickpea pancakes with eggplant, tahini and beetroot hummus dips and salad to dig into. All breakfast dishes come with a choice of Mimosa or hot drink. If you want something healthy then Benedict’s can offer you Fruit Salad. We can’t attest to its quality (we were on full indulgence attack at the time of ordering - sorry, not sorry) but we’re sure it will be good.
THE PRICE: A drop-in class is €24. First-timers can get three classes for €39. And it’s also available on Classpass. Vegan Breakfast €12.6, Full English €19, Shakshuka €16.7, Tower of Babylon €6. French Toast €9, Pancakes plain €9, White chocolate espresso and banana coconut are €10.5. Half pancake portions are €6.5. Toppings range between €1-2. “Steak n Eggs Texas Style” €28, “Philly Cheese Steak sandwich” €20.5. Vegan breakfast €12.6.
BEST FOR: Discovering a new kind of club and possibly eating too much. But trying your best to work it off with a hard-core work-out before-hand of course.
