Outdoor Bootcamp + Dr. Maury
Bootcamp open-air fitness before wine-time. Otherwise known as group therapy.
START: Outdoor bootcamp, Friedrich Ludwig Jahnsportpark on the edge of the basketball court near the Eberswalder Strasse.
FINISH: Dr. Maury, Schönhauser Allee 62, 10437 Berlin.
U / S - BAHN: Eberswalder Straße.
THE WORKOUT: Thursday night bootcamp at 18.15pm with Daniel. Warmer weather and longer nights mean that we can go back to working out outdoors without any complaining. Daniel has a friendly group of regulars who are open to drop-ins and new faces to show up and join in the session. Every class changes with exercises that are varied and designed to push you to your limits. Think typical body-weight bootcamp training with a mix of jogging, plank holds push-ups, lunges, partner exercises and higher intensity explosive movements like burpees and jump squats. Daniel seals in the community spirit with high fives and good byes. You really feel part of a crew here, and that’s a really nice feeling.
FYI: The class is in English and German.
THE FOOD: Wine and small plates courtesy of Dr. Maury make the perfect post work-out snack and casual rehydration joint (otherwise known as a wine bar) to hit up on a casual Thursday evening with friends.. Expect a warm greeting (a welcome change in the city) and a long, interesting wine list packed with smooth, light whites and peppery, juicy french reds. Just ask the more than helpful staff for some suggestions. The small plates here are far more interesting than the standard meats and cheeses typical of Berlin’s traditional wine bars. Olives come green, fat and buttery, salty Gouda cheese is balanced out with sweet beetroot and caramelized onion. Larger sharing plates also feature fresh smoked trout with spicy wasabi mayonnaise, and the Beef carpaccio is so finely sliced the silky smooth meat just melts in the mouth with a hit of parmigiano and capers. All in all, a bloody good stop-off before heading home for one sleep until the weekend. If you are looking for something a bit more substantial then the team behind Dr. Maury also have a restaurant just round the corner called Les Valseuses. The seasonal food and weekly changing menu is a hit with locals for good reason.
FYI: Dr. Maury hosts brilliant wine tasting events that they like to call “Group Therapy” once a month or so where you get to try a selection of six wines and small plates with some Sommelier guidance for just €20. Keep an eye out on their Facebook page for news on their next events.
THE PRICE: Outdoor Bootcamp: A drop-in class €11, first-timers have a free trial. Dr Maury: Glass of wine from €4, small plates from €4-8.
BEST FOR: Thirsty Thursdays.
