Condal CrossFit + Bar Salvatge
IF YOU LIKE CROSSFIT YOU’LL LOVE THIS PLACE. BUT EVEN IF YOU AREN’T A CROSSFIT CONVERT, YOU STILL WILL - THE PEOPLE HERE ARE JUST THAT NICE! AND THE WORK-OUTS REALLY DO WORK. THEN THIRSTY THURSDAY CALLS FOR WINE O'CLOCK.
START: Condal CrossFit Gracia, Carrer de l'Encarnació, 20, 08012 Barcelona.
FINISH: Bar Salvatge, Carrer de Verdi, 50, 08012 Barcelona.
METRO: Joanic / Fontana.
THE WORKOUT: Thursday’s WOD at 19pm (WOD is the “workout of the day”). To fill you in, each day a new WOD is posted to the offical CrossFit site and it's part of a complete program designed to improve strength and conditioning. Each box (a.k.a. CrossFit gym) either runs with it (with modifications) or switches it up with past WOD’s. CrossFit Condal does a mixture and every day you work on something new and you record your score at the end. This makes for the ultimate motivation since you can track your progress. It’s also a fantastic way to train your body, to keep it guessing and continually adapting.
When you walk into CrossFit Condal everyone knows everyone. Its that family kinda spirit that makes this place so special, and they welcome anyone new with open arms too. The Head coaches Carlos, Raül and Quim clearly know their stuff. They give clear explanations and demonstrations with every exercise. They also take the time for a proper warm-up and cool-down. Throughout the class, you’ll have a head coach leading, whilst other team members walk around the group to check proper technique and form. You couldn’t be in safer hands. A WOD might entail a combination of learning and practising the technique of dumb-bell thrusters (a squat and shoulder press movement), power-snatches and toes-to-bar (a shoulder and core-killer) and then completing a combination of these exercises for a specific number of reps for time. It could also involve a running masterclass or rowing for distance matched with sit-ups. The joy is you never know what you are going to get. But this also means that whatever your fitness level, you will be challenged, you will sweat and you will also feel so accomplished afterwards. When the timer signals the end of the WOD, high-five your fellow class-mates. Now you’re officially in the family :) Make sure to pack a towel to shower in the changing rooms after.
FYI: If you want a class that’s more high intensity and body-weight style then try the METCON class, also at 19:00pm.
THE DRINKS: Quench your thirst with a glass of natural wine perched on a stool in this buzzing locals bar. The neon lights and bottle-filled walls add some rustic cool. The owners here are passionate about supporting natural wine makers and wild vineyards and are keen to share how good they taste too. Most, if not all of the wine is from Spain and there are specials available to try on tap - just like beer! Depending on your taste-buds, tell the team and they will suggest a few for you to try. The whites you like might be citrusy, light and fresh. For red it might be rich cherry tones. Whatever it is you’re sure to find something you like, if not love here. No need to settle on trying just one - since the wine is natural, this means its chemical and pretty much head-ache / hangover free too! Bar Salvatge also serves up high quality tapas to line the stomach all made with love and seasonal ingredients. For autumn think roasted pumpkin with creamy Burrata, home-made hummus, fresh goat cheese with crisp green salad, and boards of fresh cheese, fresh bread and various dried hams and meat. Satisfy your sweet tooth with a home-made honey-cream tart. Later in the evening this place gets packed, so once you nab a spot make sure you keep it safe - else you’ll be standing.
FYI: If you’re a Londoner then this place is like Vagabond, but with proper table service and local love!
